Florida Drone Registration

Florida Drone Registration
There is currently no special requirement for Florida drone registration, as all drone and UAV registration requirements are overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration. Florida residents are encouraged to review the FAA's new registration requirements. A quick summary of the new requirements are listed below:

As of December 21 2015, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS - commonly known as "drones") to be registered. All drones weighing over .55 pounds (this includes all DJI Phantoms, Parrot Bebop, and other similar drones) are required to be registered with the FAA. This requirement extends beyond Florida and applies to residents of all 50 states throughout the United States.

  • Drone registration costs $5 and will need to be renewed in 3 years. Renewal will cost $5 every time.
  • Failure to register an aircraft may result in civil penalties up to $27,500. Criminal penalties include fines of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three years.
  • Nearly all drones that cost over $100 (and many that are under $100) exceed half a pound, which means they will need to be registered. Yes, this means that a kid's "toy" drone probably needs to be registered.
